Our Data Sources
How We Build the Directory
The station inventory comes from the U.S. Department of Energy's NREL Alternative Fuel Stations database. Every station page shows a "Verified {date}" line: the most recent of NREL's last-confirmed date, Open Charge Map's last-verified date, or a ChargingNear.me driver check-in. Synced daily from the U.S. Department of Energy.
Sources Feeding the Site Now
Listed only when the source completed a successful sync in the last 7 days (checked ).
- U.S. Department of Energy (NREL)
- Primary station inventory: address, ports, network, access, hours. Authoritative for which stations exist in the United States. We sync every state each day and reconcile additions, updates, and decommissions. Each station's "Verified" date uses NREL's own last-confirmed date when it is the most recent. Cadence: Daily, all 50 states plus DC. Last successful sync: . Documentation.
- Open Charge Map
- Connector-level detail and each listing's last-verified date. Community-maintained dataset. Used for connector-level kW where NREL lacks it, and its last-verified date can set a station's "Verified" date. Cadence: Batched verification pass. Last successful sync: . Documentation.
- TomTom
- Port-availability readings for supported networks. Each reading is shown with the time it was taken. "Available now" is used only for readings 15 minutes old or newer. Cadence: On-demand checks. Last successful sync: . Documentation.
Tesla and ChargePoint stations come from NREL's Alternative Fuels Data Center, plus a few Superchargers from supercharge.info. We cross-check them against Open Charge Map, TomTom and OpenStreetMap.
Our crawler identifies itself as ChargingNearMe/1.0 (+https://chargingnear.me/data-sources). It makes at most 50 requests a day to any one source and stops when a site says no.
Paused Sources
These sources have not completed a successful sync in the last 7 days, so we do not count them as feeding the site. Data imported from them earlier stays visible with its own date.
- Google Places — Photos, opening hours, ratings, and a sample of recent reviews. Last successful sync: May 27, 2026.
- OpenStreetMap — Cross-validation of locations, amenity tags. Last successful sync: no successful sync on record.
Reference Datasets
- US Census Bureau
- City population and demographic context. Used to compute chargers-per-capita stats on city pages. Annual release.
- EPA eGRID
- Grid CO₂ intensity by subregion. Used to estimate the CO₂ savings of charging at a given station. Annual release.
- Community submissions
- Driver check-ins, reviews, and correction reports. Free-text content is moderated before publication.
Data Licensing
Station data on ChargingNear.me may be reused under our API Terms. When using our data, please attribute both ChargingNear.me and the US Department of Energy NREL as upstream sources. Reliability scores, availability readings, and demand data are proprietary and available only on paid API plans. See our developer documentation for API access details.
