Exits and mile markers are approximate. Miles are measured along I-70; each charger can be up to 2 miles off the highway. The Working-Now Score (0–100) is how likely a station is to work right now. The last one is less than 0.1 miles from exit 26.
How much of I-70 meets the NEVI 50-mile rule?
158.8 of 248.0 miles of I-70 between Denver and Grand Junction meet the 50-mile rule today; 89.2 miles do not. Built November 3, 2026 from AFDC’s port-by-port listings.

A stretch meets the rule when NEVI-grade stations are 50 miles apart or less along the highway. NEVI-grade means at least four CCS ports that can each deliver 150 kW at once (23 CFR 680.106), within 1 mile of I-70. The 50 miles come from FHWA’s NEVI guidance of February 10, 2022; FHWA’s August 11, 2025 guidance leaves spacing to each state, and Colorado’s NEVI plan keeps 50 miles. 23 CFR part 680 itself sets no spacing. A stretch is measured between NEVI-grade stations, which can sit outside this page’s Denver–Grand Junction window. Every station’s result and the reason it fails are in the NEVI-grade station file.
Which NEVI-funded fast chargers are coming to this stretch?
The Colorado Energy Office has awarded federal NEVI funds to 7 fast-charging sites within 2 miles of I-70 between Denver and Grand Junction that its award list still shows as in progress. They are planned, not open.

Where are the chargers around the mountain passes?
- Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel: 11,112 feet on average (CDOT), the highest point on the Interstate System (FHWA). Heading west, the last fast charger before it is the Annex Site Georgetown in Georgetown (exit 228), 12.3 miles short of the tunnel; the next is the Tesla Supercharger in Silverthorne (exit 205), 8.2 miles past it.
- Vail Pass: I-70 is 10,590 feet up at exit 190, the summit (USGS). The nearest fast chargers on either side are in Frisco (exit 195) and Vail (exit 176), 19.8 miles apart.
How does winter affect an EV on I-70?
- Cold: in AAA’s tests (AAA, February 7, 2019), at 20°F with the heater on, electric cars lost 41 percent of their range on average: 100 miles of range became about 59.
- Climb: from 5,178 feet at exit 274 in Denver (USGS) to the tunnel’s 11,112 feet (CDOT) is a climb of 5,934 feet. Lifting a 2,000 kg (4,400 lb) car that high takes at least 9.9 kWh (mass × gravity × height), before drivetrain losses. Some comes back on the way down through regenerative braking.
- Check your car: Will my EV make it from Denver to Vail? and Denver to Glenwood Springs run your car, battery and the forecast over this climb.
Where can I check I-70 road conditions?
- COtrip (cotrip.org): CDOT’s road-conditions site, where active traction and chain laws are posted.
- Colorado’s Traction and Chain Laws: what CDOT requires on your tires when a traction or chain law is in effect.

Can I drive an EV from Denver to Vail in winter?
As of November 3, 2026, there are fast chargers on both sides of Vail Pass: in Frisco (exit 195) and Vail (exit 176), 19.8 miles apart. In AAA’s tests (February 7, 2019), electric cars lost 41 percent of their range on average at 20°F with the heater on. Will my EV make it from Denver to Vail? runs your car, battery and the forecast over the climb.
Where is the last fast charger before the Eisenhower Tunnel?
Heading west, the last one is the Annex Site Georgetown in Georgetown (exit 228), about 12.3 miles before the tunnel. Heading east, it is the Tesla Supercharger in Silverthorne (exit 205), about 8.2 miles before it. The tunnel is 11,112 feet on average (CDOT), the highest point on the Interstate System (FHWA).
How much of I-70 from Denver to Grand Junction meets the NEVI 50-mile rule?
As of our daily build on November 3, 2026, 158.8 of 248.0 miles meet it: there, NEVI-grade stations are 50 miles apart or less. NEVI-grade means at least four CCS ports at 150 kW each (23 CFR 680.106, February 28, 2023), within 1 mile of I-70. The 50 miles come from FHWA’s guidance of February 10, 2022, which Colorado’s NEVI plan keeps.
How much does cold weather reduce EV range?
In AAA’s tests (February 7, 2019), at 20°F with the heater on, electric cars’ range fell by 41 percent on average. That turns 100 miles of range into about 59.
How are the distances on this page measured?
Along I-70 itself, on CDOT’s line for the highway, between the points where each charger is closest to it. Each charger is also up to 2 miles off I-70, so allow for the drive to and from the exit.
How is this list made?
We read every public DC fast charging location in our live station data and keep those within 2 miles of I-70 between exit 274 and exit 26, measured on CDOT’s line for I-70. Mile markers are CDOT’s mile points, which Colorado also uses to number I-70’s exits; the exit shown is the nearest numbered exit in OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors). The Working-Now Score (0–100) is how likely a station is to work right now, from its listed status, how recently it was confirmed and drivers’ check-ins in the last 30 days (how the score works).
